The general thinking goes that, if one is Sad he/she should listen to Happy Songs to uplift their mood…and if already Happy we should listen to even happier songs to sustain that happiness & spread happiness all around us…

Therefore, the Question arises is : Why do we listen to sad songs in that case?

The truth is that elevating ones moods takes Energy, and therefore it’s much easier to stay in the current state of Sadness then otherwise, as it will help the individual indulgence in self-pity simultaneously gathering feelings of sympathy from friends/well wishers around us…It is like a Medical center where one rests, recuperates & rejuvenates before going back to the perils of the day to day world….

Truth is is that the more person is into sadness, the more difficult it will become to convince them to come back to a state of happiness. These people start feeling guilty in enjoying their own life compared to the ones who are suffering due to one or the other reason….

It all boils  down to these Sad songs that cut across all boundaries of historical timelines and cultures, effectively stating that Music provoked sadness (MPS) serves a tangible function. Sad music plays a vital role of emotional regulation, if at all the strongest emotion evoked by sadness is Nostalgia.

It effectively means, that it makes us think of how we were in the past, in what state are we in now and how we overcame many such challenges to reach here. It promotes a feeling of Hope in an individual…that happiness is achievable again even though one might be in a different state as of now. That feeling of once being loved, not because of what we could do or give but simply who we are.

We tend to relate to each and every word in our sad songs, and it makes us empathize with the singer/writer….even others have faced emotions such as fear, rejection, loss or etc. Comparing our problems to others, does help us keep a realistic balance of the extent of our issues vis-a-vis others.

Misfortune and sorrow are as much part of our lives as much as love and happiness.

Even if we listen to songs, that bears no resemblance to our own issues it allows us to vent out sadness without the side effects of real life consequences. Such mental states can help individuals on topics such as problem resolution and compassion for others in a same state or situation.

Within health boundaries Sadness helps us in more than one ways to make our lives better. It can curb impulsive decisions and teach us planning for the future. Music invoked sadness also helps us enrich emotions such as empathy, compassion, forgiveness and kindness

Some sadness are good as well !!
